Raid on Easter Egg Island with Penarth and District Wargames Society

If you can’t tell by our previous blogs we are always incredibly excited when we know we get to collaborate with Penarth and District Wargames Society (PDWS).

This game was absolutely no exception, every time they visit the set ups and the game concepts just get better and better!

The game concept for “Raid on Easter Egg Island” was:

Billy Bonapart’s crew set out on an expedition to Easter Egg Island but never returned, a note was found by the only survivor.... One Ear Flynn:

We went to the island to buries Billy’s treasure but found clues to a golden egg that was worth a King’s ransom. On the island there be fell creatures, some that walks as men and carry weapons. The crew I went with lie buried in graves or their bones be scattered over the island. That was the doing of Billy and his crew. They weren’t going to leave until they found that egg and now they’ll never leave! Be warned least the same fate befall you!

As always, PDWS game themes are always so well thought out and this one tied up perfectly with the children’s Easter Holidays. We couldn’t resist and got brainstorming ideas right away!

Our Makerspace tables in Penarth are very conveniently egg shaped so almost instantly we had our entire Island. Working with PDWS we just needed to consider the type of terrain that we would need and any characters that may need to be created.

Egg Shaped tables in Penarth Makerspace prior to completion of Makerspace

We wrote up a list of any characters or terrain that would be needed and looked at what could be created in the Makerspace. We came up with the following:

  • Boats with Counter spaces

  • The Golden Egg

  • Game Counters

  • Woodland Warriors

  • Pirates

To save us a LOT of time we source our 3D Print files from Thingiverse which is an amazing resource for 3D Printing. Access to Thingiverse and all designs uploaded to Thingiverse is completely free.

The boat that you can see in the gallery above is a brilliant example of this as it even has counter slots for the characters to prevent them moving about too much. You can find the design here - DND Boat

The egg is another brilliant example of a design that you can access for free however, I am unable to source the original file. There are so many other designs available when you search “Egg” in Thingiverse but also from another amazing resource Printables which is an alternative free to access 3D print catalogue like Thingiverse.

We created the counters using Canva and laser cut them with our Glowforge.

Some of the Pirates and the Woodland Warriors were sourced by the Wargamers but I’m sure similar files could again be found on Thingiverse or Printables.

Within a few sessions we soon had everything that was needed for the ‘Raid on Easter Egg Island’ so it was time to dress up and get the game set up!

PDWS really do think of all the details when it comes to their games and even brought along some chocolate eggs and rabbits for the children to discover as part of the game.

The game was a success, the Golden Egg was found and all the children went home happy and loaded with chocolate eggs.
