Lle i Dyfu Microgreens Project
Lle I Dyfu is an experimental art project themed around local, sustainable food production. Throughout spring 2023 we hosted a series of free arts workshops funded by CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) in collaboration with Urban Vertical.
Each workshop was inspired by microgreens, using them to create a wonderful range of artwork using digital and hands-on approaches. We also demonstrated how to grow microgreens at home and gave every participant a free kit of seeds, compost and grow trays to help get them started.
The project concluded with an exhibition of all the work created alongside our table top microgreens farms, and a taster Cyanotype workshop, as part of The Vale Food Trail 2023.

Zine Workshop
A zine is a self-published, non-commercial print-work that is produced in small, limited batches, a perfect workshop idea for creating our own. Making our Microgreens Zine was fast and fun and worked well for our micro topic!
Cyanotype Workshop
Cyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process invented in 1842 by scientist and astronomer Sir John Hirschel, which produces a cyan-blue print when a chemistry-coated surface is exposed to sunlight. The fast process of capturing our microgreens using Cyanotype compliments the speed that microgreens can be cultivated.
Kids Collage Workshops
A collage is a form of visual arts in which visual elements are combined to create a new image that conveys a message or idea. Collage comes from the French word “collér,” which means “to glue'. It's a fun way to develop awareness of colour and texture, and great for developing ideas and solving problems. In this workshop, the group decided to create a juxtaposed landscape to convey the imbalance of our planet.
During this collage workshop we looked at Food Miles, and the group decided to create their work using food packaging and labelling, and key words they found in magazines and newspapers. We were shocked to find out some of the food we had picked up from the supermarket that morning, travelled from as far afield as Peru and China!
Stop Motion
Stop Motion is a cinematographic technique whereby the camera is repeatedly stopped and started, to give the impression that the objects being shot are moving on their own. In our Stop Motion workshop, we worked as a group creating a 'How to' guide in growing your own microgreens at home.
Photography Workshop
In our Experimental Photography session, we created a gallery of work which explored viewing microgreens from alternative angles and lenses to give surprising results! We also created a group image using seeds and microgreens, which was an interesting exercise in discussing how every individual interpreted artwork.
